Road Construction To Impact Airport Access
March 10, 2006

<< Back to News & Statistics

Starting March 15, the reconstruction and widening of northbound I-29 from Main Avenue to Cass County 20 including the reconstruction of the 19th Avenue overpass will begin. This will include continuing three lanes northbound from Main Avenue to 19th Ave. N. Traffic will be routed head-to-head (one lane in each direction) on the southbound I-29 roadway, beginning just north of Main Avenue and ending north of Cass County 20. This will impact traffic access to/from the airport via I-29 and 19th Ave North.

Please visit  I-29 CONSTRUCTION UPDATES for road closures and maps.

Signage will be installed to detour traffic in the impacted areas.

Key construction dates

Why is this project necessary? This is a continuation of the last six years of construction on I-29. The Interstate needs to be rebuilt because of deteriorating roadway conditions and traffic projections that are exceeding the existing capacity.

Why close 19th Avenue Bridge over I-29? The existing bridge is centered on the existing roadway to the east. This eliminates any way of constructing half of the bridge at a time. Closing the bridge is the only way construction can be completed.

Will the extra southbound lane that connects the 12th Ave southwest ramp to I-29 remain open? Yes, this was installed to help alleviate the congestion of southbound I-29 where the ramp meets I-29. This should help move southbound traffic through the construction zone more smoothly.
