Airport Installs AED

Posted March 12, 2001

The Municipal Airport Authority recently purchased an automatic electronic defibrillator (AED) and installed it in the passenger terminal.

Like many airlines and other airports across the United States, the AED has become an important device used to save lives. Heart Attacks are the leading cause of death in the United States and a defibrillator is the only effective way to assist the heart to begin beating normally again.

The AED is a very simple device to use. The unit will only shock the patient if the heart is defibrillating. The unit is totally automatic once the shock patches are placed on the patient’s chest. The AED will actually tell the responders exactly what to do and when to do it.

A training program will be available for all interested terminal employees for using the AEDs and to also provide CPR.

The unit was installed adjacent the up escalator in plain view of anyone using the passenger terminal. The device will be within a minute of any location in the passenger terminal. The Municipal Airport Authority will purchase a second unit at some point in the future and install it on the second floor.
